Sima was studying at a tuition center for her final examination, when a man opened the door and splashed acid on her face. “I felt an intense burning. I knew from an Indian TV show that I had to pour water on my face to prevent the liquid melting my skin,” she told The Baltic Review from her hospital bed in Kathmandu, recalling the acid attack.Her friend Sangita Magar, 16, was reportedly the “target of the attack”, and she is said to be in critical condition. From petty quarrels to rejection in love, reasons provoking acid attacks are varied. “I did not call the police; I run home as fast as I could while my friend was taken to the hospital by her parents,” recounts 15-year-old Sima. The first few hours following an attack are considered the most important ones. With acid, the burning continues ‘dissolving’ the skin until it is neutralized. In countries such as Nepal attacks are believed to cause greater damage.Our daughter didn’t receive proper treatment even five hours after the attack,” Sangita’s family members said. Acid violence rarely kills but it scars you for life. Experts say that women and girls are victims in 75-80 percent of cases. Of the female victims, about 30 percent are under 18. Acid attacks appear to bedisproportionately common in South Asia, according to the Acid Survivors Trust International. The prevalence of attacks in the region can be explained by the easy availability of acid which can be found “at the corner store and as cheap as 30 cents a litre”. As far as Nepal is concerned, there is no concrete and reliable data. Most acid attacks are not reported and often remain unheard. Representatives of the Women’s Rehabilitation Centre (Worec), said that survivors receive little support to access criminal and legal justice systems. Victims seeking justice face numerous legal hurdles and most are forced to drop criminal charges.

On the initiation of Honorable Pashupati Shamsher J.B Rana and his wife Rani Usha Rajya Rana Nepal Gas Udyog was established in 2028 B.S. at Balaju Industrial Estate. Nepal Oil Corporation was established in 2027 Poush. It started functioning at 2028. His Majesty’s Government of Nepal gave sole authority to import petroleum products from India on the basis of Bilateral Agreement signed between Nepal and India. At first Nepal imported gas from IOC’s Visakha Patnam Refineries 65 kg cylinders due to road constraints and technical knowhow. Then it used to be refilled in 12.8 kg cylinder which had MV valve (tap system) not like today’s SC Valve. Meanwhile in India 14.2 kg Cylinder were widely popular which had SC valve (ie Self Closing Valve). Nepal implemented the same for general public convenience. After 1974 AD IOC relocated Barauni Refinery for Nepal as Barauni was very close geographically. Slowly from 5 Mt tanker truck it came in practice of 18 Mt tanker truck for transportation of LP Gas from Indian Refineries. Meanwhile the demand of LP Gas increased rapidly in Nepal. To meet the increasing demand of LP Gas users, Koshi Gas Udyog Pvt. Ltd. and Lumbini Gas Udyog Pvt. Ltd. was established in 2043 BS with the motive of mass production. In the year 2051 BS, Baba Gas was established to meet the increasing demand.

Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev (28 December 1945 – 1 June 2001) was a King of Nepal. The son of King Mahendra, whom he succeeded in 1972, he reigned until his death in the 2001 Nepalese royal massacre. He is the most internationally well-known Nepalese king in modern history.King Birendra was born at the Narayanhity Royal Palace in Kathmandu as the eldest son of the then Crown Prince Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev and his wife Crown Princess Indra Rajya Laxmi. In 1959 King Birendra enrolled at Eton College in the United Kingdom. The government has resumed road-expansion along the Tripureshwor-Nagdhunga section in Kathmandu Valley. The work had remained stalled following the April 25 earthquake and aftershocks. Kathmandu Valley Development Authority (KVDA) Thursday resumed the marking of illegally built structures for demolition, to upgrade the Tripureshwor-Kalanki road to six lanes and the Kalanki-Nagdhunga section to four lanes. KVDA is responsible for clearing illegally built structures along the roads to pave the way for road expansion work. In the first week of April, KVDA had started marking off buildings that encroached on the road from Tripureshwor to Nagdhunga, to widen the section to 22 meters. The road section is one of the busiest in the Valley. But following the devastating earthquake, the marking stopped completely.

Nepali classical music has its origins in the Rig Veda. Later, the metrical chanting of its hymns found its expression in the songs of Sama Veda. Since then classical music has been a part of the Nepali music sphere. The tradition of playing classical music has been handed down from generation to generation. The classical structure of a melody is known as Raga, and there are hundreds of Ragas either played on musical instruments or sung according to seasons and time. The 24 hour period is divided into 8 segments of 3 hours each and each Raga is restricted to a particular time frame in order to produce the desired effect. At times, some branches of these ragas composed of songs are incorporated in dances. Small groups of itinerant minstrels namely Damais and Gaines have become an integral part of the Nepali folk culture. Traditionally, Gaines go from door to door singing folk songs accompanying themselves on the Sarangi (a local violin-like instrument) as this is their profession. They travel from place to place telling tales often related to past events. The Newars of Kathmandu Valley are the main exponents of classical dancing. They have kept alive the traditions of performing masked dances during their many colorful festivals. Such dances are often of a Tantric nature with the dancers being possessed by various gods and goddesses. The Lakhe dance is of particular interest and in Bhaktapur the colorful Mahakali masked dancers perform during the Indra Jatra festival each year. The Tharu people of the tarai have their own stick dances that can mesmerize spectators while the Gurungs have a unique drama-like dance called the Ghantu where young girls go into a trance. The dance speaks of their heritage and depicts past events that are of historical significance. These are also sometimes performed especially for tourists.

The Canadian government on Monday extended its help to rebuild the structures damaged in the 2015 earthquake and help Nepal for future crises. Jean Lebel, President of Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Nadir Patel, High Commissioner of Canada to India announced USD 1.2 million aid for reconstruction efforts to restore damaged housing, public buildings, and infrastructures.“This initiative will support mountain communities in their rebuilding and rehabilitation efforts following the earthquake of 2015,” said Lebel, “And the knowledge generated will be shared in the wider region to improve disaster planning and preparedness to reduce the devastating impacts of such events.” The Canadian government also expects the aid to help in natural disaster management, risk management, rehabilitation, strengthening livelihoods and community resilience in the country, according to the statement. “While it is important to rebuild infrastructure after the earthquake, it is critical that the focus be on rebuilding livelihoods. The whole Hindu-Kush Himalayas is a high hazard region for earthquakes, and the lessons learned need to be transferred to other countries in the region, a role that ICIMOD as regional, intergovernmental organisation can play,” informed Director General of the ICIMOD, Dr. David Molden.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli returned home on Wednesday night after completing his six-day visit to India.Though PM Oli has maintained that his visit was “highly successful” in clearing the misunderstandings that had surfaced after the promulgation of the constitution, no joint communiqué was issued at the end of the visit, in a major departure from the tradition. According to highly placed sources on both sides, India’s reservations (about some constitutional provisions) continue to persist, as a result, the visit ended without issuing a joint communiqué. A joint communiqué has been the tradition at least since 1990 when Nepali heads of state or government visit India. Nepal’s Ambassador to India Deep Kumar Upadhyay confirmed that there was no joint communiqué after PM Oli ended his state visit to India, largely due to lack of interest from the Indian side. Officials privy to the visit told the Post that despite initial preparations in New Delhi to issue a joint communiqué and senior officials from both sides working hard to finalise the content and wordings, India’s refusal to categorically “welcome” Nepal’s new constitution became the sticking point. Until Wednesday afternoon, Joint Secretary Prakash Subedi, who looks after India Desk at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Abhay Thakur, joint secretary (North), in-charge of Nepal and Bhutan in New Delhi, were working on the joint communiqué, but they could not finalise it after they failed to agree on the content and wordings.

The same can be said about the 4.4 inches (112mm) of trail and the 24-degree rake angle, but the wheelbase has jumped 0.6 inches (152mm) to 57.5 inches (146mm) for the all-important, especially for the targeted riders, stability. Sure, the engine might follow the scheme mentioned above, but when it comes to the scales, the Sixty2 sits at 403 lbs (182 kg) in wet form, which means it’s only 8 lbs (3.6 kg) lighter compared to the standard Scrambler.

Deuba camp has also delayed formal announcement of candidates waiting for the establishment side to make the first move. Party sources said Deuba is waiting for the establishment side to make the first move so that he could take a strategic decision. Deuba held meetings with leaders, including Shashanka Koirala and Khum Bahadur Khadka, to win their support but both Koirala and Khadka remain undecided about who they would support and on what condition. “If the establishment side announced its team for office bearers’ positions, the disgruntled leaders can be brought to our (Deuba) camp. So, we are waiting and weighing the developments before formally announcing candidates from our side,” said a leader belonging to the Deuba camp. Meanwhile, Khum Bahadur Khadka, an influential leader of the party, today held a gathering of his supporters at the home of former MP Rabindra Lal Shrestha in Baneshwor and discussed the group’s strategy. The gathering formed a committee comprising Central Working Committee members Shankar Bhandari and Pushpa Bhusal to hold talks with both the establishment and the Deuba panel, according to Bhandari. “We will hold talks with both the sides and will support the one which would best accommodate our group,” he said. NC is preparing to hold discussions on the party’s policy and programme at the CWC meeting slated for tomorrow.

Bimal Gharti Magar (born 18 September 1997) is a Nepali footballer who plays as a forward for Central ANFA Academy which is an academy controlled by the All Nepal Football Association and the Nepal national football team. He is the youngest player to ever play for the Nepal national team since Rohit Chand made his debut at the age of 17 in 2009. Magar was born in Nawalparasi,Panchanagar 2,Nepal. Nepal national team coach, Krishna Thapa, said “He is a very young boy. He played well in the first match. I can’t demand more from him in the first international match”. He is the youngest player to play on SAFF game and he scored his first goal against Pakistan on the injury time. Nepal Head Coach, Jack Stefanowski said “A 16 year kid became hero of Nepal, he’s no more a kid, he is an actual Hero, he is our Neymar”.

Dashcam footage capturing the heart-stopping moments which lead to the fatal shooting of an armed suspect has been released by by South Carolina police.The incident on Nov. 17 last year began when Sergeant Frank Ballentine of the Cayce Public Safety Department approached suspect Demetrius Bryant’s car, WLTX reported.The officer told Bryant, 21, he could smell marijuana in the car and asked him to step outside.The footage shows Ballentine was then joined by Public Safety Officer Rhett Kelly after calling in Bryant’s details and discovering he had not registered the car. The two officers searched Bryant and found marijuana in his pocket.As the officers attempted to arrest Bryant, the suspect resisted before pulling out a gun from his back pocket and opening fire on the officers.The officers returned fire and chased Bryant around the side of an apartment. Off-camera, more gunshots are heard.Bryant was shot twice in the upper body and died of his injuries.Officer Kelly was hit by a gunshot to the leg.Both officers were cleared of any wrongdoing over the incident and have returned to work

The 24-year-old hid her leg under baggy clothes and refused to wear a dress or a skirt for more than a decade when her school friends called her the Michelin Man and other cruel nicknames. Amazingly Meagan even managed to hide the condition from her boyfriend of two years, Robert Neidenfeuhr, 27. Meagan said: “If Rob and I were sitting next to each other watching a movie there would be a big, thick blanket between us so he couldn’t feel how hard my leg was. “We had been together for two years when I went public and he had no idea.”He claims that he never noticed her swollen leg – even when the couple was at their most intimate. Robert added: “She was extremely careful but I really didn’t notice, there were lots of closed doors, lots of lights off – that kind of thing.” Despite her insecurities Meagan has decided to go public about the condition in the hope that other young girls do not suffer in silence like she did. Meagan, from Minneapolis in the USA, said: “I really don’t know how I’ve hidden this for so long.“I guess I don’t want other young girls to have to go through what I did.“At the time I would rather have not been alive than have lymphedema. “After opening up, it’s just taken this weight off my shoulders and I feel so much happier.“I was extremely depressed I would come home from school every day, cry and ask why me – it felt like my life was over at 15. “At my lowest point I had written a suicide letter to my dad – I told him I was done and I was just going to end it.” Meagan’s condition began in puberty when her lymph nodes did not grow large enough to process fluid, which then remained trapped in her leg. The result was extreme swelling in her right leg with up to three litres of excess fluid being stored at any one time. “I woke up one morning and my foot was slightly swollen,” added Meagan. “It wasn’t painful at the time and I didn’t think anything of it. “I saw multiple doctors who said it may have happened during puberty because my lymph nodes didn’t grow or that I could have injured it in some other way – they had no idea what caused it. “When I was finally told that I had incurable lymphedema it felt like my life had ended – that’s exactly how i took the news.” Meagan has to wear painful compression pants for 70 minutes each day to provide temporary relief from the pain. “All my joints ache constantly and normal day to day activities like walking and going to work are extremely painful,” added Meagan.“I’m starting to come to terms with the condition but for ten years I felt like I belonged in a circus.“Along with the pants I have to use a manual compression pump whenever I can to get rid of the swelling.”Despite the condition having no known cure Meagan would be able to gain long-term relief from liposuction.Unfortunately health insurance companies in the USA consider her condition to be cosmetic and have denied her the treatment she needs.

Ahead of Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's upcoming visit to India, Kathmandu has finalised a comprehensive wish list it wants New Delhi to fulfil. Projects related to infrastructure and hydel development and power transmission top Mr Oli's agenda for the six-day visit commencing February 19, officials in Kathmandu said. The wish list for Mr Oli's visit -- his first foreign tour since assuming office in October last -- includes finalisation of two hydro-power projects of a total 750 MW capacity that have been on the table for quite some time now. The two projects together would cost about $1 billion. Nepal is estimated to have the potential to generate 42,000 MW of hydropower but today produces 800 MW -- far less than the domestic demand of 1,400 MW. The two power projects were among agenda-points that Nepal's Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel had proposed to his Indian counterpart Arun Jaitley and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj during a visit to New Delhi earlier this month.

Nepal to import 80 MW electricity from India

The government is preparing to import 300 megawatt of electricity from India within the next one and half year. The joint standing committee meeting of energy secretaries of Nepal and India here on Friday agreed on the import of 80 MW of electricity from the Dhalkebar-Mujjafpur cross-border transmission line within the next three weeks. Also, the meeting agreed on the import of more power via the same transmission line, with the decision of initiating processes necessary for operating the line in a full-fledged capacity by December, 2017. Despite the potential of importing 1,000 MW of electricity from the Dhalkebar-Mujjafpur transmission line, there is no high power substation at Dhalkebar to transform power as per the demand. So there is a need to increase the capacity of substation for the import of additional power. Besides, the meeting agreed on the matters relating to increasing the capacity of Kataiya-Kushaha and Raxual-Parwanipur cross–border transmission lines. The capacity of both transmission lines is 132 KV and additional 100 MW of electricity would be imported via these transmission lines. The meeting expressed commitments to complete the construction of both transmission lines by September 2016, according to Energy Ministry's Joint Secretary and Spokesperson Dr Sanjay Sharma.
