A couple of curious Dutch tourists join a crowd of onlookers watching local workmen struggle to reinstate a statue on its pedestal in front of the main Narayan temple. One night last month, the gold-plated statue of Bhupatendra Malla and two other images disappeared from the temple courtyard. The statue of Bhupatendra Malla was found the next day by a cowherd, partially buried in a forest about a kilometre away, and was reinstated this week. The two other images have not been recovered. Worries of another trade embargo by India has set off panic buying of fuel in Kathmandu with long lines of motorists forming in front of gasoline stations from early in the morning. Lalitpur local Bikram Shrestha said he arrived at the Sajha Petrol Pump at Pulchok at dawn on Monday to find that there was already a long queue. “I came here as early as possible after hearing that India was imposing a blockade once again,” said Shrestha who was waiting in line with almost 100 other motorcyclists. He seemed convinced that India would launch another blockade as Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had signed a transit agreement with China. During the recently concluded trade embargo that lasted four and a half months, the country was crippled by a fuel shortage forcing the government to sell firewood in the Kathmandu Valley so that people could cook their food. Meanwhile, the state-owned oil monopoly Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) said that fuel shipments from India were normal, and that there was no sign that they would be reduced.

KATHMANDU, March 24: The Metropolitan Police Crime Division has arrested two men on Thursday from Tribhuwannagar VDC of Sarlahi district in connection to the murder about a month ago of a 19-year-old girl.The girl, who had accompanied her facebook friend of three-month to the apartment of another man, was killed following a scuffle that ensued after she refused to have sex with the owner of the apartment, whom the police has refused to identify. Two days after she was reported missing on February 20, the body of the girl, Venisha Limbu, from Rajarani-3, Dhankuta, who had been residing in Kapan, was found buried near a bamboo grove in Bhaktapur.Limbu, a the 12th grader at Lumbini College and a teacher at Kalopul-based school, met a group of boys via her three-month-long facebook friend Rajan Rai, 19, of Morang district.

PM Oli's press advisor Pramod Dahal told the National news Agency (RSS) that during the meeting held at Hotel Shangri-La of Shaanxi Province, they discussed on various issues including matters of mutual relations and interest between the two countries and post-earthquake reconstruction work in Nepal. On the occasion, Prime Minister Oli invited Xi'an Municipal leaders to the International Buddhist Conference scheduled to be held in Nepal later this year. The Chinese leaders, during the meeting, briefed PM Oli about the support provided by Shaanxi province to Nepal after the April 25 earthquake. Also today, Prime Minister Oli visited the historic Terracotta warriors Museum at Xi'an. Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the state-owned power utility, is reducing loadshedding hours to 77 hours per week from Tuesday, considering the board examinations of Grade 10, which is beginning on March 31. With this reduction in loadshedding hours, the country will face power cuts for around 11 hours per day on average, according to Bhuwan Kumar Chhetri, chief of Load Dispatch Centre at NEA. At present, the country goes without electricity for up to 84 hours per week, or 12 hours per day on average. Nepal currently generates around 762 megawatts of hydroelectricity, whereas peak demand, this year, stood at over 1,300 MW. Even the power generation capacity of normal times dips during winter because most of the hydro projects are built under run-of-the-river model. Run-of-the-river hydro projects generate electricity whenever there is water in the river. So, as soon as water level dips, electricity production from these projects falls. To meet the deficit, the country is currently importing around 315 MW of electricity from India.

Property worth around Rs 80,000 was destroyed in a fire, in Bhagwanbahal of Thamel on Sunday. According to police, the fire was induced by a gas leakage in a rented room of Nagan Puri Sherpa (46). Three persons including a police constable have been arrested on charge of abducting and extorting Rs 4, 00,000 from a businessman, on Sunday. Acting on a tip-off, a special team deployed from the Parsa District Police Office nabbed constable Arbinda Singh and two others; namely, Deepak Singh of Bhiswa, Birgunj-18 and Bhagawan Singh of Ranighat, Birgunj-14. During the raid at Bhagawan Singh’s house, police had discovered Rs 472,000 cash, bank vouchers, cheque books, land registration certificate and other financial documents which amounted to Rs 2.4 million, said police.
